Why attend?
Academic libraries, and libraries of all types, are being asked to
demonstrate their impact upon student and community learning. The
speakers will introduce the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher
Education (2004) as a framework for assessing academic libraries. This
workshop will utilize presentation, discussion and small group activity
to explore how to effectively incorporate the standards at your
library. While the focus of this workshop is on academic libraries, the
techniques and processes are applicable to any library who is being
asked by funding sources, the community, board members, and others to
demonstrate their impact through measurable outcomes.
By participating in this workshop you will:
· Become familiar with the ACRL Standards for Academic Libraries.
· Learn to utilize commonly collected information such as statistics for internal and peer comparison of inputs and outputs, as well as user satisfaction and service quality data for evaluating the academic library.
· Learn to incorporate performance indicators and outcome assessment measures to assess the impact of your librarians and library on student learning.
· Begin the evaluation process of your library using forms, worksheets, checklists, and practical examples as a guides.
· Apply the principles and techniques of assessment to your own library's mission and goals.
· Develop a framework for establishing assessment plans for your institution.

Who are the workshop presenters?
William N. (Bill) Nelson
Dr. Bill Nelson has been Professor and Library Director at Augusta State University in Georgia since 1993. He received BAs from Centenary College in English and in History. Postgraduate degrees include an MA and a PhD in Latin American Studies and an MLS, all from Louisiana State University. He has served as library director at Mobile College, Carson-Newman College, and Samford University. His research and publication interests include ALA and ACRL standards, SACS accreditation, and the GALILEO Project. He chaired the GALILEO Steering Committee (1996-1998) and served another two-year term on the Committee (2003-2005); he also served two years on the GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries) Steering Committee. He completed a two-year term (2001-2003) as chair of the ACRL Committee on the Status of Academic Librarians and was a member of the Task Force on Academic Library Outcomes Assessment (1997-1998). He was recently appointed Chair of the ACRL Standards and Accreditation Committee; he also chairs the new ACRL Guidelines for Media Resources in Academic Libraries Review Task Force.
Robert W. Fernekes
Dr. Bob Fernekes is an Assistant Professor and Information Services Librarian, Business Specialist, at Georgia Southern University. He is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a BS in Sociology. Postgraduate degrees include an MLS, an EdS in Library Science, and a PhD in Education from George Peabody College in Tennessee. Upon retirement from the US Army as a communications officer, he served as the User Education Librarian at the University of South Carolina in Aiken and as a Reference Librarian at the Aiken County Public Library. His research and publication interests include linking technologies for connecting students to library resources. He recently completed a term on the ACRL University Library Section (ULS) Standards Committee.
Both presenters served on the ACRL College Libraries Section (CLS) Standards Committee, of which Dr. Nelson was chair. The Standards Committee produced the 2000 edition of the Standards for College Libraries. They both were appointed to the ACRL College and Research Libraries Standards Task Force where the CLS, ULS, and CJCLS sections worked together on a common set of standards for all higher education libraries. The task force produced the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education, based on the CLS standards. Approved in June 2004, the ACRL Standards is intended to apply to all types of libraries in higher education.
