Our annual meeting encourages presentations and
participation by members; such presentations often help the presenters
with tenure requirements and provide a means of information about new
ideas and practices to our members. As an example, last year's
annual meeting featured statewide cooperative collection development
efforts presented by the Southeast Regional Manager of YBP Library
Services; a discussion of E-books and netLibrary; and a panel
discussing collection development, fiscal issues, facility design,
technology, instruction, and access. A copy of the schedule is
attached. Future plans include a program at the state library
association's annual conference and a jointly-sponsored presentation by
Tom Sanville of OhioLINK at this year's ACRL/LA annual meeting.
One of the year's goals was to increase our
membership through a concentrated membership drive. Our
membership had fallen to 145, and was increased to 195 (and counting!)
through this drive, which is continuing. As part of the drive,
application forms were sent to designated members at all Louisiana
academic libraries, who were asked to distribute them to applicable
staff members. Additionally, we continue to have a representative
from Louisiana State University's School of Library and Information
Science on our executive board; this student assists us in recruitment
efforts among librarians-in-training.
In addition to the recruitment drive noted above,
membership records were made more accessible through the creation of a
searchable database, and a task force was developed to handle
membership records and recruitment in a more efficient manner. We
sold copies of our biennial Directory of Academic & Research
Librarians and had more copies printed; we are currently preparing an
updated edition. Thanks to a $1000 grant from NASIG, we will be
presenting Tom Sanville (noted above) at this year's annual
meeting. Our newsletter has been revamped, and is used not only
to disseminate information but also for recruitment purposes.
