The Louisiana Chapter of the Association of College and Research
Libraries
facilitates professional development activities through our annual
conference held in the
fall. This conference held jointly with the LOUIS (Louisiana Online
University
Information System) Users Conference brings in members and potential
members from
all over the state. In the fall of 2002, the Vice President/ President
Elect, Laverne
Simoneaux, planned the program and conference held in Hammond,
Louisiana on
October 25 and 26. The conference theme, 2001: An Information Odyssey,
included
an address by keynote speaker, Patricia Iannuzzi-- "Exploring New Roles
for Librarians:
the Information Literacy Odyssey." Additionally, members were
encouraged to take
part in the conference through contributed sessions and discussions
geared towards
academic librarians and their concerns. (See attached materials.)
The Louisiana Chapter is especially proud of its efforts to increase
membership.
We are now at an all time high of 221 members. Our very effective
Academic
Institution Liaison Program has been the key. Each academic institution
has an
identified ACRL-LA Liaison who serves on the Membership Committee.
These liaisons
make contacts with faculty and staff at each institution to promote
membership and
remind National Members that they are automatically members of the
state chapter.
The membership form is online which makes it easy for members to renew.

This spring at the Midwinter Conference in New Orleans our chapter with
the
help of members, Ed Rock and J.B. Hill, sponsored a pre-conference
workshop on
Friday, January 18th at Tulane University. The workshop, Creating a
Continuous
Assessment Environment in Academic Libraries: Practical Application of
the Standards
for College Libraries, 2000 Edition, was presented by Bill Nelson and
Bob Fernekes.
Information about this pre-conference can be found at
/acrl/alapreconf.htm
All profits from this conference were dedicated to an Information
Literacy Workshop for
members to be held this year.
The Louisiana Chapter of ACRL actively represents the state's academic
libraries. Its leadership continues to innovate and offer outstanding
programs for its
members.
